My Last French Residency Work: ‘You Catch More Flies With Honey'

‘You Catch More Flies With Honey,' is a 10 yard drawing I've been working on for 2.5 years. Yes, that’s 30 feet x 3.5’. Since I’m getting ready to embark on my next Artist Residency, my third one in France, I wanted to dust this one off and showcase it. I started this in Champagne in 2017. On That trip my proposed project was to draw and paint on 2 rolls of lovely drawing paper that were each 10 yards x 42." As you may of figured out by now there's still more to do. I'm in no rush. I've enjoyed the process.

Each of these photos shows around 2 more feet of the 30 feet. And I’m only showing you about 10 feet of it. Photographing this elephant is monumental. Ultimately, when I completely done, I’ll have it scanned. I may need to rob a bank to do that.

I had a drawing professor who suggested it's always good to have a long term drawing up in your studio. He suggested hanging it on an entrance wall so that you can attack it every time you walk in. I adored his classes. Everything revolved around pouncing on your work and giving it your all. With this precept in place it gives me continuity to walk in the studio and without any hesitation pick up where I left off. As an artist often there are confusing moments of what and where to start work.

Paris Gardens are so thoughtfully orchestrated. Could you imagine the challenge of being a landscape architect in France? I fell in love with these mini trees, near the Lourve, that are uniformly sized and in alignment with each other. And, of course, they’re perfectly coifed. The trees became the design element for the drawing. There’s 10 of them. Each one is ensconced with cultural elements from France.

Enjoy, XO Rebecca
